Dormouse History
To follow up on last month’s dormouse report, I looked back to 2010’s AGM, and found what Jen said then and the snoring dormouse!
“By mid October we would expect the dormice to be considering hibernation but we found one well-fed female which was half asleep and snoring really loudly (I’m serious, even its mouth was open ) There was yet another new and magnificent
nest in one of the new boxes; a small dormouse nest had been made on top of a birds nest and another nest had been started further over. To have six, possibly seven, boxes out of fourteen occupied by dormice is pretty extraordinary.”
Great news! And here’s the snoring female……..
And here’s what I said then:
“Doesn’t she look cosy! I feel quite envious. in the present weather, hibernation feels like a very good idea!”
A sentiment I echo this year, especially as I sit here typing while Storm Bran howls overhead, hurling rain to lash against the windows, and drip through onto my kitchen floor!!! I’m thinking about what havoc is being wreaked on our poor Stara Woods and all the trees and wildlife down there, not to mention our bridge, so vulnerable to being damaged by the rising water and fallen trees and debris being swept down the river – I just hope the damage isn’t too great, but I’m certainly not going down there to look until the storm is well past! Today is certainly a day to hibernate!
